✨ Why Quality of Life Matters

When a person has limited access to meaningful activities, friendships, and enjoyable routines, challenging behaviors can increase boredom or unhappiness. Improving quality of life can remove the reason the behavior is happening.

✅ Example (Realistic Scenario)

If staff choose activities they like (example: always going to the same place), a person may resist because it’s not meaningful to them. PBS encourages staff to rethink routines and add real choices.

✨ Ways DSPs Support Quality of Life

  • Offer real choices (not fake choices)
  • Build enjoyable routines with the person’s preferences

  • Support community involvement that fits the person’s interests

  • Make sure the person has regular positive attention and connection
