Waivers for people with developmental disabilities (DD) are programs that help eligible individuals receive services in the community. A waiver allows Medicaid funding to be used for home and community-based supports instead of only institutional care. The goal is to help individuals live meaningful lives with greater independence, safety, and inclusion.

DD waivers may cover supports that help with daily routines, communication, health and safety needs, skill building, and community participation. The services a person receives are based on their individual needs and their approved service plan. Supports should always be respectful, person-centered, and based on consent.

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), your role is to help the person work toward their goals, protect privacy, and provide support in a way that promotes dignity and choice. Waiver services are not about controlling someone. They are about supporting someone to live the life they choose as safely and independently as possible.
