✨ Why This Section Matters

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) helps Direct Support Professionals respond to challenging behavior in a way that is person-centered, respectful, and effective. Instead of trying to “stop” behavior through punishment, PBS focuses on changing the environment and supports, and teaching new skills so the person has more choice and control in their life.

✨ What You Will Learn

In this section, you will learn how to:

  • Understand what Positive Behavior Support is and why it works

  • Recognize that behavior is communication

  • Identify common reasons challenging behavior may occur

  • Follow behavior support plans in a consistent, respectful way

  • Use observation and documentation to help the team support the person successfully

🧠 Key Reminder

PBS focuses on an improved quality of life as the main goal. Reducing challenging behavior is often a result of that – not the only focus.
