DSP Orientation
✨ Why Nutrition Matters
People with disabilities have the same needs for good nutrition and healthy weight management as anyone else. Some people may also need special diets because developmental disabilities can be associated with medical conditions such as epilepsy, allergies, diabetes, or heart problems.
✨ What DSPs Support With Nutrition
Depending on a person’s needs and interests, your role may include:
-
Helping plan nutritious, well-balanced meals
-
Overseeing meal preparation
-
Monitoring and encouraging appropriate amounts of food
-
Supporting healthier choices when dining out
✅ Important Reminder About Food
As a DSP, resist the temptation to reward or coax someone with food. Food should never be earned. When you want to recognize positive behaviors, use meaningful non-edible rewards such as praise, a short walk, a phone call to a loved one, one-on-one time, or a short shopping trip.
👥 Special Note for Aging Adults
Your guidance is especially important for aging adults whose nutritional needs, appetite, and vulnerability to illness can change. The supports you provide help people remain in their homes and communities as they age.
